Job Description

Lab Director Overview

  • The Lab Director will oversee clinical laboratory operations, ensuring compliance, quality, and efficiency in diagnostic services.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and hospital leadership to deliver accurate and timely results for patients of all ages.
  • Manage laboratory budgets, equipment maintenance, and operational adjustments during peak and slow periods.
  • Lead quality assurance and control activities, including proficiency surveys and policy updates.
  • Implement new tests, methods, and instrumentation to enhance laboratory capabilities.
  • Supervise staff hiring, training, evaluations, and continuing education to ensure high performance.
  • Support licensure and compliance through educational initiatives and in-service training.
  • Provide leadership in change management and productivity improvement projects.
  • Offer opportunities for professional growth and development within a dynamic healthcare environment.

Lab Director Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Direct laboratory operations, including specimen preparation, analytical procedures, and result reporting.
  • Maintain equipment performance through quality standards, troubleshooting, and service planning.
  • Monitor workload and productivity, adjusting operations and staffing as needed.
  • Lead quality assurance and control activities in consultation with pathologists.
  • Oversee laboratory information systems, recommending improvements and ensuring security.
  • Implement new tests, methods, and instrumentation to enhance laboratory services.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and manage laboratory staff performance and development.
  • Support licensure and continuing education compliance through training initiatives.
  • Participate in committees and task forces to drive productivity and innovation.

Lab Director Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field is required.
  • Medical Technologist/MLS certification through ASCP or AMT is mandatory.
  • Current West Virginia High Complexity Testing Personnel license or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience, including 3 years in management.
  • Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical technology and management principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to serve patients across all age groups effectively.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe environment and infection control practices.
