Job Description
Responsibilities:
• Create and implement medical protocols and guidelines for the care of shelter animals.
• Follow and promote all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols and contribute to development and maintenance of these.
• Lead, guide, and consult the team on medical treatment plans for animals in our care and those within the public wellness clinic.
• Maintain and build outside veterinary relationships to provide after-hours care and support for foster parents.
• Be a part of executive leadership and decision making because we believe shelter medicine affects all areas of shelter operations.
• Collaborating with the Executive team to develop the organization’s budget planning and regularly track and report upon progress toward goals.
• Work with professional consultants to guide and establish our future scope of work within our public community animal care clinic.
• Provide mentorship and training to veterinary externs once a strong medical team has been established.
• Maintain effective communication with staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, and daily medical rounds.
• Lead by example and facilitate good working relationships through teamwork and collaboration. Project a calm, professional demeanor and positive attitude.
• Strive to reduce length of stay (LOS) and maintain our shelter’s adoption-driven capacity and capacity for care.
• Provide high quality veterinary medical and surgical care in accordance with ASV guidelines.
• Perform spay/neuter surgeries, including pediatric sterilizations, and additional surgery as necessary. Additional surgeries include but are not limited to dentistry with dental radiography, enucleations, exploratory laparotomies, tumor removal, amputations, etc.
• Consult and collaborate with specialty veterinary partners on special cases.
• Ensure that all state and federal laws, state regulations, and accepted standards regarding veterinary operations, drug control, and high quality veterinary medicine are adhered to.
• Contribute to the monitoring, protection, and improvement of the physical and behavioral health of shelter animals, both on an individual and population basis through collaboration with the behavior team.
• Practice compassionate care for the animals in our shelter and encourage all staff to do so through protocol and continued education and certification.
Requirements:
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an accredited university with no history of disciplinary action required. Certificate or advanced training in shelter medicine preferred.
• Valid State of Florida Veterinary license.
• Valid DEA license, or ability to obtain one.
