● High School Diploma or Associates degree and Credentialed Alcohol and Substance
Abuse Counselor (CASAC) with five (5) years of substance abuse counseling experience;
OR
Bachelor’s degree with CASAC-T and 2 years of experience.
● Experience with mentally ill, substance abuse, formerly homeless people preferred.

JOB TITLE: Substance Abuse Counselor
LOCATION: Bronx, NY
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time,35 hrs
JOB SUMMARY
The Substance Abuse Counselor completes initial and annual substance abuse assessments for all clients, participates in the development of the initial service plan and its revisions, and provides individual, family and group substance abuse counseling and advocacy and referrals to community programs as needed. The Substance Abuse Counselor monitors clients’ attendance at programs and provides documentation of all contacts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
● Performs substance abuse assessments, collaborates with case managers to identify mutually
agreed upon long and short-term substance abuse related goals and develop a comprehensive
service plan.
● Provides substance abuse counseling and support services to clients.
● Facilitates weekly substance abuse groups including harm reduction, relapse prevention
conflict resolution, etc.
● Responsible for conducting initial intake interviews and assessments (as determined by site
protocols) for all new clients and establishing case records.
● Provides individuals and group clinical case management services for his/her caseload of clients.
● Performs crisis intervention, assessment, advocacy, negotiation, referral, and case planning activities with clients as needed.
● Train clients in activities of daily living skills.
● Conducts unit/bed inspections, at least once a week and review the results of the inspections with the client.
● Escorts clients to appointments (medical, entitlements, housing, etc.).
● Serves as liaison with various agencies, schools, health care providers, mental health providers, entitlements, and employment and training providers in the interest of the clients.
● Participates in weekly individual supervision with his/her supervisor, team meetings, housing/case reviews and case conferences.
● Completes HRA 2010E applications.
● Completes incident reports and submit to supervisor for review.
● Perform all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of community resources preferred.
2. Knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse principle and practices required.
3. Knowledge and understanding of team concepts preferred.
4. Prior experience in case management, assessment, counseling, housing, and crisis intervention preferred.
5. Flexibility and ability to grow with job.
6. Good written and verbal communication skills.
7. Computer literate specifically with Microsoft applications required.
8. One (1) year experience with CARES and AWARDS database systems preferred
