LABOR AND DELIVERY NURSE MANAGER
POSITION OVERVIEW
This position works a convenient alternating schedule of two, 12-hour shifts one week and three, 12-hour shifts the following week, averaging 30 hours per week or 60 hours per pay period. A night shift differential of $14.10 is provided for this leadership role in our Labor and Delivery unit.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages Labor and Delivery unit's day-to-day clinical operations including maternal care practice standards, staffing, payroll, budgets, fiscal management, and perinatal quality improvement
- Ensures delivery of highest quality obstetrical care in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and established maternal-newborn policies and procedures
- Develops and implements action plans to improve labor and delivery nursing staff development
- Supervises a single birthing unit (8 to 24 hours) of approximately 20-60+ labor and delivery nurses and support staff
- Monitors allocation and utilization of personnel based on maternal-fetal patient population/needs to provide optimal antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care while identifying savings opportunities
- Oversees daily labor and delivery operations, including human resources management, obstetrical department/employee safety programs, and maternal risk management
- Monitors obstetrical service quality and utilization standards while assuming responsibility for unit-level maternity patient care
- Ensures coordinated birth plans, family-centered care, and cost-effective obstetrical service utilization
- Collaborates with obstetricians, perinatologists, neonatologists, midwives, and other healthcare providers outside the unit to achieve optimal maternal-infant outcomes
- Researches, identifies, and implements best practice models for high-risk deliveries and maternal care from other labor and delivery units
- Investigates and resolves maternal patient/family concerns regarding childbirth experiences and care
WORK SCHEDULE
- Variable night shifts in Labor and Delivery
- Alternating schedule: 2, 12-hour shifts one week and 3, 12-hour shifts the next week
- Average of 30 hours weekly or 60 hours per pay period in obstetrical services
- $14.10 night shift differential for labor and delivery leadership
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
- Minimum two (2) years of labor and delivery nursing experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience as obstetrical charge nurse, maternal care preceptor, perinatal quality improvement champion, or related labor and delivery leadership role
License/Certification:
- Active California Registered Nurse License
- Basic Life Support certification
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Evidence of completed training as labor and delivery preceptor or obstetrical charge nurse
- Demonstrated knowledge of maternal-child quality improvement, obstetrical care delivery processes, birthing unit staffing, and labor and delivery budgeting
- Knowledge of Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission maternal standards, and other regulatory requirements for birthing centers
- Strong interpersonal communication skills for coordinating multidisciplinary maternity care teams
- Department-specific certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP, fetal monitoring) may be required for labor and delivery management
- Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment with obstetrical team members
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- ACLS certification strongly preferred for high-risk obstetrical management
- Bachelor's degree in nursing with labor and delivery specialization preferred
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
- Inpatient Obstetrical Nursing certification (RNC-OB)
- Experience with vaginal births, cesarean sections, high-risk pregnancies, and obstetrical emergencies
