INPATIENT PEDIATRIC UNIT ASSISTANT NURSE MANAGER

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position offers work life balance with an alternating schedule of 2, 12-hour shifts one week and 3, 12-hour shifts the following week, averaging 30 hours per week or 60 hours per pay period. A night shift differential of $14.10/hr is provided for 12-hour night shifts.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the Pediatric Nurse Manager in overseeing day-to-day clinical operations including pediatric care practice standards, staffing, scheduling, payroll, budgets, fiscal management, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Ensures delivery of highest quality pediatric care in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and established pediatric unit policies and procedures
  • Develops and implements action plans to improve pediatric nursing staff development and clinical competencies
  • Supports supervision of the Inpatient Pediatric Unit (24 hours) of approximately 20-60+ pediatric nurses and support personnel
  • Monitors allocation and utilization of personnel based on pediatric patient acuity/needs to provide optimal care while identifying savings opportunities
  • Assists in overseeing daily pediatric unit operations, including human resources management, pediatric safety programs, and risk management
  • Monitors pediatric service quality and utilization standards while assuming responsibility for unit-level patient care during assigned shifts
  • Ensures coordinated treatment plans, family-centered care, and cost-effective pediatric service utilization
  • Collaborates with pediatricians, pediatric specialists, child life specialists, and other healthcare providers to achieve optimal outcomes for hospitalized children
  • Researches, identifies, and implements best practice models for pediatric care from other inpatient pediatric facilities
  • Investigates and resolves patient/family concerns regarding pediatric hospitalization experiences

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Alternating schedule: 2, 12-hour shifts one week and 3, 12-hour shifts the next week
  • Average of 30 hours weekly or 60 hours per pay period
  • $14.10/hr differential for 12-hour night shifts
  • Position requires occasional weekend and holiday coverage in pediatric setting

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years of inpatient pediatric nursing experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as pediatric charge nurse, pediatric preceptor, quality improvement champion, or related leadership role

License/Certification:

  • Active California Registered Nurse License
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Basic Life Support certification

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Evidence of completed training as pediatric preceptor or pediatric charge nurse
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric quality improvement, care delivery processes, pediatric staffing, and budgeting
  • Knowledge of Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission pediatric standards, and other regulatory requirements for inpatient pediatric care
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills for coordinating multidisciplinary pediatric teams
  • Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment with pediatric care team members
  • Demonstrated ability to manage pediatric emergencies and high-stress situations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) certification strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing with pediatric specialty focus preferred
  • Master's degree in nursing administration, education, or related field highly desirable
  • Experience with pediatric medication administration, IV therapy, and pain management
  • Experience with chronic illness management, acute care pediatrics, and adolescent care
  • Demonstrated leadership in pediatric quality improvement initiatives and family-centered care practices
