Job Description
Position Overview:
The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the development of accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for complex commercial, institutional, and industrial construction projects. This role involves managing the bid process from initial concept through final submission, collaborating with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure competitive and well-supported proposals. The Senior Estimator also provides mentoring and guidance to junior estimating staff and contributes to process improvements in the preconstruction department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for construction projects during all phases, including conceptual, schematic, design development, and construction documents.
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates.
- Identify and quantify risk factors, unusual conditions, and cost-saving opportunities.
- Develop scope of work for subcontractors and vendors, review their proposals, and ensure complete coverage of all project requirements.
- Coordinate and conduct bid reviews, project walk-throughs, and meetings with clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors.
- Provide input into value engineering, constructability, and logistics planning during preconstruction.
- Collaborate with project managers and field teams to support seamless transition from preconstruction to project execution.
- Maintain historical cost databases, unit price libraries, and benchmarking data to support continuous improvement and estimating accuracy.
- Mentor and support junior estimators, reviewing work for accuracy and completeness.
- Contribute to process enhancements, estimation tools, and best practices within the preconstruction team.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 7 years of experience in estimating for commercial, institutional, or industrial construction projects.
- Proficiency with estimating software such as WinEst, Sage Estimating, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, building systems, and cost drivers.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates simultaneously under tight deadlines.
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
- Familiarity with BIM and digital takeoff tools (e.g., Bluebeam, OST, Revit) is a plus.
