Job Description
The Director of Health Information Management provides vision and operational leadership for all HIM functions, including coding, medical record management, data integrity, regulatory compliance, release of information, and privacy practices. This leader will collaborate closely with clinical and administrative teams to ensure the accuracy and security of health information across the continuum of care, while optimizing the use of technology and ensuring the organization's readiness for audits, surveys, and reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight and strategic direction for all HIM services, including coding, transcription, document imaging, and release of information
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations including HIPAA, CMS, and The Joint Commission
- Oversee accurate and timely ICD-10 and CPT coding practices; monitor coding audits and performance metrics
- Manage and enhance the integrity and security of electronic health records (EHR) and health information systems
- Lead HIM staff recruitment, retention, training, and professional development
- Serve as the organization’s expert in health information policy, privacy, and data governance
- Collaborate with IT, Compliance, and Quality teams to support data reporting, clinical documentation improvement (CDI), and risk management
- Maintain readiness for surveys and audits; develop and enforce HIM policies and procedures
- Monitor trends in healthcare information management and lead the implementation of best practices and innovative solutions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, or a related field required
- Master’s degree preferred
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential required
- Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) or similar credential preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare HIM setting
- Deep understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, EHR platforms, and regulatory requirements
