Job Description

Overview

  • Provide advanced clinical care and surgical assistance within the cardiothoracic surgery department, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and adherence to medical protocols.
  • Collaborate with supervising physicians and multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive care in inpatient, surgical, and outpatient settings.
  • Perform diagnostic evaluations, prescribe medications, and implement therapeutic measures under delegated medical staff privileges.
  • Demonstrate leadership and mentorship to the physician assistant team, fostering professional growth and team cohesion.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and maintain current certifications, including BLS, ACLS, and DEA licensure.
  • Engage in vessel harvesting and first-assist procedures during cardiothoracic surgeries, contributing to surgical success.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, including weekends and holidays, to provide continuous patient care coverage.
  • Utilize Epic software and Microsoft Office tools for documentation and communication purposes.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assist in cardiothoracic surgeries, including vessel harvesting and first-assist roles, ensuring surgical precision and patient safety.
  • Conduct patient evaluations, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress in collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests to support patient care and treatment outcomes.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to physician assistant team members, promoting professional development.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control protocols and regulatory requirements, ensuring a safe healthcare environment.
  • Utilize Epic software for accurate documentation and patient record management.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to provide continuous patient care coverage, including weekends and holidays.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care strategies and optimize outcomes.

Job Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current NYS Physician Assistant Licensure/Registration and unrestricted DEA certificate.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Completion of NYS Mandated Infection Control Course Certificate (renewable every four years).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications for assigned areas of practice.
  • Recent operating room experience, including cardiothoracic surgery first-assist and vessel harvesting.
  • Proficiency in Epic software and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
