RN Clinical Documentation Specialist Overview

  • The RN Clinical Documentation Specialist ensures accurate and complete clinical documentation for compliance and billing purposes.
  • This role involves concurrent audits of medical records to verify data consistency and clinical documentation completeness.
  • Collaborate with external auditors, medical records, and ancillary departments to coordinate audit scheduling and execution.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports on audit findings, including deficiencies and corrective actions.
  • Conduct in-service training sessions for staff on compliance, billing regulations, and medical terminology.
  • Engage in process improvement initiatives to address and rectify documentation deficiencies.
  • Work on-site during an 8-hour shift, Monday through Friday, with no night or weekend shifts.

RN Clinical Documentation Specialist Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Perform concurrent audits of medical records to ensure demographic data and clinical documentation accuracy.
  • Pre-audit medical records for accounts scheduled for external audits or patient-requested reviews.
  • Lead process improvement teams to address and correct documentation deficiencies.
  • Represent the organization in audit findings discussions with compliance committees.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and internal departments for seamless audit scheduling and execution.
  • Prepare monthly reports summarizing audit results, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff on compliance, medical terminology, and billing practices.
  • Stay updated on federal and state billing regulations and compliance guidelines.

RN Clinical Documentation Specialist Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing, or enrollment in an RN-BSN or RN-MSN program.
  • Active California RN Licensure is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a medical auditor with knowledge of medical records and coding.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and database applications.
  • Familiarity with hospital billing systems, compliance issues, and federal regulations.
  • Strong understanding of medical and managed care terminology, CPT/ICD9 coding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present to executives.
  • Experience in customer service is preferred.
