Phlebotomist Overview

  • As a Phlebotomist, deliver exceptional patient care through precise specimen collection and handling in a dynamic healthcare environment.
  • Perform venipunctures and other collection techniques with accuracy, ensuring patient comfort and adherence to protocols.
  • Maintain detailed records of patient information and specimen data using digital systems and laboratory requisition forms.
  • Support laboratory operations by centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test protocols.
  • Provide clear explanations of procedures to patients, fostering understanding and reducing anxiety.
  • Collaborate with a dedicated team to ensure seamless laboratory workflows and exceptional service delivery.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on industry standards and best practices in phlebotomy.
  • Contribute to a safe and compliant workplace by adhering to strict hygiene and safety guidelines.

Phlebotomist Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Perform venipunctures and specimen collection using straight and butterfly needles with precision and care.
  • Label, centrifuge, and store specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols and test requirements.
  • Ensure accurate matching of requisition forms with specimen tubes to maintain data integrity.
  • Package specimens securely for transport, preserving their integrity and viability for testing.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, complying with safety regulations and wearing protective equipment.
  • Update patient information and laboratory records promptly and accurately using digital systems.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding laboratory results, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and decontamination of laboratory equipment to ensure operational efficiency.

Phlebotomist Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required for eligibility to apply.
  • Minimum of 1 year of phlebotomy experience; 2 years preferred for advanced proficiency.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture techniques using various needle types and collection methods.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling, labeling, and storage protocols to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations for maintaining safety and compliance.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate and organized records.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain procedures and address patient concerns effectively.
