Job Description

Senior Controller Overview

  • The Senior Controller will oversee financial operations within a dynamic real estate environment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Lead a collaborative accounting team, providing strategic guidance and fostering professional growth among team members.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting, aligning with U.S. GAAP, partnership agreements, and lender requirements.
  • Develop and monitor annual budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses to support organizational goals.
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements, capital call letters, and audit documentation in coordination with external auditors.
  • Review tenant leases, operating agreements, and contracts to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and financial distributions, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness within the accounting department.

Senior Controller Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Implement and monitor internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial data and compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, reports, and analyses for investors, lenders, and management.
  • Coordinate year-end audits and compile necessary documentation for tax reporting.
  • Analyze general ledgers, process journal entries, and manage balance sheet account schedules.
  • Review accounts payable invoices, cash receipts, and rent rolls for proper classification and accuracy.
  • Prepare variance analyses, debt service payments, and compliance reports for financial operations.
  • Ensure compliance with sales tax regulations and prepare annual 1099 forms.
  • Foster collaborative relationships across departments to support organizational objectives.

Senior Controller Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with 5 years in property controller roles.
  • Proficiency in Yardi accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, FASB regulations, and financial principles.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Experience with financial reporting, audits, and regulatory compliance.
  • Comfortable supervising, coaching, and mentoring accounting staff.
