Grants Accountant Overview

  • The Grants Accountant oversees financial management for grant portfolios, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in financial processes.
  • Collaborates with program staff, development teams, funders, and auditors to manage grant funds effectively.
  • Ensures grant funds align with programmatic needs while adhering to funding requirements and regulations.
  • Maintains accurate financial records and prepares reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supports audits by providing documentation, reconciliations, and explanations as required.
  • Analyzes financial data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provides training and guidance on grant management policies and best practices.
  • Stays updated on grant accounting standards and industry practices to enhance processes.

Grants Accountant Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Develop and maintain financial systems for grant management and reporting.
  • Monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with budgets and funding agreements.
  • Prepare journal entries and analyze general ledger activities.
  • Collaborate with teams to resolve budgeting and compliance issues.
  • Prepare and submit grant budgets, invoices, and financial reports.
  • Support internal and external audits with necessary documentation and reconciliations.
  • Partner with stakeholders to provide financial guidance for grant-funded initiatives.
  • Analyze financial data to recommend process improvements and risk mitigation strategies.

Grants Accountant Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Minimum of two years of accounting experience, with three years in grants accounting preferred.
  • Proficiency in GAAP and nonprofit grant accounting principles.
  • Experience managing NYC, NYS, federal, and private grants and contracts.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and accounting systems; Sage Intacct preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey financial information effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
