Data Center Engineer Overview

  • The Data Center Engineer will manage hybrid infrastructure operations, combining hands-on hardware tasks with systems engineering responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of Linux and Windows environments.
  • Support data center operations, including hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of infrastructure procedures and standards.
  • Engage in capacity planning and lifecycle management of physical and virtual assets.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to address critical infrastructure incidents promptly.
  • Enhance operational efficiency through proactive monitoring and maintenance of systems.
  • Ensure compliance with security protocols and best practices in data center operations.

Data Center Engineer Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Rack, stack, and cable servers and networking equipment following standards.
  • Administer Linux and Windows servers, ensuring optimal performance and security.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity issues across copper and fiber infrastructures.
  • Perform physical layer testing and validation for fiber and copper connections.
  • Coordinate hardware decommissioning and manage inventory records accurately.
  • Collaborate with vendors for hardware deliveries and circuit activations.
  • Document procedures, runbooks, and network diagrams to support operations.
  • Apply patches, updates, and firmware upgrades adhering to change management processes.

Data Center Engineer Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in data center operations or systems administration.
  • Proficiency in Linux and Windows server build and administration.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware installation and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking, VLANs, and DNS/DHCP configurations.
  • Ability to perform fiber testing and manage structured cabling systems.
  • Preferred certifications: CompTIA Server+, RHCSA, MCSA/MCSE.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
