Behavioral Health Counselor Overview

  • The Behavioral Health Counselor provides integrated care using brief, solution-based interventions to enhance patient wellbeing.
  • Collaborates with medical and dental teams to address psychosocial stressors and improve health outcomes.
  • Focuses on short-term interventions rather than traditional counseling or ongoing therapy.
  • Works in an innovative primary care setting, supporting diverse patient populations.
  • Contributes to improving patient adherence to treatment plans and overall quality of life.
  • Engages in evidence-based behavioral health assessment and treatment modalities.
  • Provides services in a federally qualified health center environment with a focus on accessibility and inclusivity.

Behavioral Health Counselor Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Collaborate with primary care teams to deliver comprehensive behavioral health services.
  • Perform patient evaluations to determine differential diagnoses and intervention plans.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to patient privacy standards.
  • Document care provided, meeting organizational standards and protocols.
  • Facilitate ethical decision-making processes as appropriate.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and refer patients for additional care within the organization or community.
  • Utilize teaching-learning theory to influence patient outcomes effectively.

Behavioral Health Counselor Job Requirements

  • Clinical licensure as LCSW or LPC-MHSP in Tennessee required.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience required; 2+ years preferred.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Arabic, or Kurdish is preferred.
  • Certification or experience in trauma, co-occurring disorders, CBT, ACT, and Solution-Focused Intervention preferred.
  • Ability to function independently in clinical decision-making.
  • Experience in integrated healthcare settings preferred.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with patients, families, and care teams.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based behavioral health assessment and treatment modalities.
  • Flexibility and motivation to work in a primary care environment.
