Job Description

Portfolio Accountant Overview

  • The Portfolio Accountant will manage financial reporting and accounting for a portfolio of real estate investments.
  • Analyze property financial reports including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for accuracy and variance explanations.
  • Perform investment-level accounting tasks such as acquisition entries, fair value adjustments, and portfolio consolidations.
  • Monitor portfolio cash needs, including funding requests and distribution requirements.
  • Calculate portfolio investment returns, assets under management, and fees for designated portfolios.
  • Prepare quarterly investor reporting, including investor and fee statements.
  • Assist with new legal entity setups and recurring journal entry roll-ups within accounting systems.
  • Collaborate with auditors and tax consultants during annual engagements and quarterly tax estimates.
  • Contribute to special projects as required to support portfolio accounting functions.

Portfolio Accountant Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Review and analyze property-level financial reports for accuracy and provide variance explanations.
  • Perform investment-level accounting tasks, including consolidations and reporting.
  • Monitor and forecast portfolio cash activity and client distribution requirements.
  • Calculate investment returns and manage fee structures for portfolios.
  • Prepare investor and fee statements for quarterly reporting.
  • Coordinate with auditors and tax consultants for compliance and reporting.
  • Set up new legal entities and manage journal entries within accounting systems.
  • Support special projects and initiatives related to portfolio accounting.
  • Ensure compliance with debt obligations and maintain portfolio support schedules.

Portfolio Accountant Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business is required.
  • 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in real estate or public accounting.
  • CPA certification or progress towards certification is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; knowledge of MRI or similar systems is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to meet tight reporting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with audit processes and tax compliance is advantageous.
