Hospital Laboratory Director Overview

  • The Hospital Laboratory Director oversees the centralized core laboratory, ensuring high-quality diagnostic services across hospital departments and affiliated sites.
  • Provide strategic leadership for laboratory operations, focusing on efficiency, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with medical directors, technical supervisors, and hospital leadership to align laboratory services with clinical and organizational goals.
  • Manage high-volume automated testing platforms, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics.
  • Optimize laboratory workflows, staffing, and automation systems to enhance operational efficiency and patient safety.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and continuous improvement of laboratory processes.
  • Oversee laboratory financial management, budgeting, and operational metrics to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Promote innovation in laboratory technologies, including middleware, LIS platforms, and automation lines.
  • Support clinical decision-making through timely and accurate diagnostic testing services.

Hospital Laboratory Director Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or related field required.
  • ASCP certification (MLS or equivalent) preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical laboratory supervisory experience required.
  • 2 years of directorship experience in a high-volume core laboratory preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory automation systems, middleware, and LIS platforms preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory financial management and operational metrics preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma or quality management training preferred.
  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration or laboratory management preferred.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills to manage laboratory operations effectively.
