Professional Land Surveyor Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Lead the development and growth of an in-house Survey Department, establishing standards and workflows.
  • Manage survey projects from initial scope through final deliverables, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Review, approve, sign, and seal survey documents in compliance with regulations.
  • Coordinate field and office survey operations, overseeing boundary, topographic, and construction layout surveys.
  • Perform property research, including deeds, easements, and title reports, to support survey activities.
  • Determine staffing and equipment needs, assisting with recruiting and training survey staff.
  • Oversee survey technology, software, equipment, and data management to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets, maintaining strong communication with stakeholders.

Professional Land Surveyor Job Requirements

  • Active New York State Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license is required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related field is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in land surveying, with 20 years preferred.
  • Proficiency in modern surveying equipment and software, including AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills are essential.
  • Experience managing survey crews and office staff is highly desirable.
  • Ability to review and take professional responsibility for survey documents.
  • Previous experience building or growing a survey department is advantageous.
