Overview
- Perform phlebotomy procedures to collect blood and other specimens with precision and care.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety during specimen collection processes.
- Prepare, label, and store specimens according to established protocols.
- Handle laboratory requisitions and match them accurately to specimen tubes.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
- Maintain specimen integrity during transport and storage procedures.
- Provide clear explanations of procedures to patients to ensure understanding and cooperation.
- Participate in annual training sessions to stay updated on best practices.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles with expertise.
- Collect and store specimens following established procedures and protocols.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Ensure accurate matching of laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes.
- Package specimens securely for transport while maintaining their integrity.
- Comply with safety regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Answer inquiries and provide laboratory results as needed.
- Perform decontamination and record maintenance data regularly.
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED is required for this position.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in phlebotomy; 2 years preferred.
- Proficiency in venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations for laboratory safety.
- Ability to handle laboratory requisitions and specimen labeling accurately.
- Strong organizational skills for specimen storage and transport.
