#WeAreGreenKey: Spotlight on Larry Greenbaum

Welcome back to #WeAreGreenKey, where we shine a spotlight on our powerhouse recruiting team.

Recently, we had the opportunity to meet with Larry Greenbaum, Executive Director on the Accounting Finance team at Green Key. Larry has been with Green Key since 2014, bringing 20+ years of experience to the accounting, finance, and temp staffing team. Known for his collaborative and supportive approach, Larry excels in mentoring his team, helping candidates advance their careers, and clients identifying qualified candidates in a competitive labor market.

His dedication to professional development and realistic job expectations underscores his passion for the industry and his role at Green Key.

Can you share your career path and how you got started in the financial services industry?

I started in accounting at MTV and then HBO. When I looked to make a job change the staffing firm that interviewed me thought I would be a good fit as an accounting & financial recruiter, so I decided to take a chance and pursue a new career.  For over 30 years, I’ve been in accounting and financial staffing, as well as business development for multiple business verticals.

What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?

It’s hard to pinpoint a specific moment, but generally, it’s about helping candidates who are down on their luck, or ready to make a change and finding them a job that sets them on a new path and boosts their career. I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of success in doing that.

The best thanks I receive is through referrals. After many years in this field, I’m not actively recruiting as much anymore. Most of the candidates I work with now are either repeat candidates & clients or people they have referred to me.

So, while it’s difficult to highlight one moment, it’s really about the overall journey of helping people’s careers and seeing them progress.

What keeps you coming back to this business every day?

It’s similar to my previous response, helping people find new jobs and advancing their careers is incredibly rewarding. I really enjoy interacting with clients and, at this point, being a mentor for my team. Sharing my experiences and being a voice of reason when they’re having a frustrating day is something I value. It’s about helping them navigate obstacles so they can learn and grow.

What sets Green Key apart from other recruiting firms?

The overall culture at Green Key is very collaborative, with a lot of support from senior management. They can track and see everything we do, but you never feel micromanaged, which is really important.

The hybrid balance we have right now, with two days in the office, works out very nicely. It’s great to be in the office for collaboration and in-person mentoring, but also have the flexibility to work from home. This allows us to manage our time effectively, whether it’s putting in long hours or taking a break to handle something at home, and then working into the evening if needed.

Having that flexibility is a key part of Green Key’s culture.

What advice would you give to candidates looking to stand out in the current job market?

To be flexible and realistic, candidates often tell us they want a 100% remote position while also looking for growth. Those two don’t typically go together.

Candidates need to present themselves professionally and be realistic. Timely feedback is crucial when we send them for interviews because we’re here to help them. They should also take our constructive feedback seriously. We conduct video interviews not just to meet them face-to-face, but to provide feedback on their presentation.

#WeAreGreenKey: Spotlight on Mariam Abdallah

Welcome back to #WeAreGreenKey, where we shine a spotlight on our powerhouse recruiting team.

Mariam Abdallah, Recruiter on our Accounting and Finance team, brings over three years of experience in recruiting, with a specialization in the accounting and finance sectors. Throughout her career, she has developed a keen understanding of the industry’s unique demands and challenges. Mariam’s journey in recruitment has been marked by a dedication to helping professionals find their ideal roles and supporting businesses in building strong, effective teams.

What inspired you to pursue a career in accounting support/financial services recruitment?

Originally, I was a health major, but a friend pointed out that I had a great personality for recruiting. At the time, I had no idea what recruiting even was, but I decided to give it a try. I eventually found myself in the field of accounting and finance recruiting, discovering a passion for helping people navigate these complex areas. Working with accounting and finance professionals, I realized how crucial their roles are in running a business. This experience allowed me to learn about their work and appreciate the intricacies of their field. I fell in love with the process and decided to stick with accounting and finance. It’s incredibly rewarding to support these professionals and contribute to the success of businesses.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is definitely the relationship aspect. Helping people and creating meaningful connections is incredibly rewarding because, at the end of the day, you’re assisting them in providing for their families or themselves. It’s a feel-good moment for both parties. These relationships often lead to referrals and continued support, whether from friends or family. Being there for them, listening, and supporting them from day one is the best feeling ever. It’s all about being able to say thank you and knowing you’ve made a positive impact.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and changes in the industry?

I find online resources incredibly helpful, especially ChatGPT. Despite some mixed feelings about it, ChatGPT provides valuable assistance. Additionally, talking to people in the industry is crucial. They offer the latest information on salaries and market trends. Engaging with people in the market is the best way to get accurate and reliable information.

What strategies do you use to find and attract top talent in the accounting and financial services sectors?

To find and attract top talent within the accounting and finance sectors, it’s crucial to understand what candidates are looking for. Even during the initial call, gathering insights from candidates, even if they aren’t a fit for the current role, is valuable for future placements. Many accounting and finance professionals experience burnout, so understanding their needs and providing what they seek is key. Flexibility, work-life balance, and career growth opportunities are often top priorities. While many are returning to on-site work, focusing on the benefits that matter to them can make a significant difference. By addressing these needs, we can better attract and retain top talent who are looking to advance their careers.

How do you balance the needs of your clients with the career aspirations of the candidates you work with?

Balancing the needs of clients with the aspirations of candidates often involves educating the client about the current market. Clients sometimes seek very niche skills, so it’s important to provide them with realistic expectations. We present multiple candidates for the same role and gather feedback to understand why a candidate may not be a fit, even if they seem ideal. This feedback helps us advise the client on potential flexibility, such as considering hybrid roles. Educating clients about market realities and available talent helps in finding the right fit, even if it takes longer.

What trends are you currently seeing in the accounting support/financial services job market?

Besides the return to the office trend, another significant trend in the accounting and finance industry is the preference for remote work. Many professionals feel they can effectively perform their roles from home since their work primarily involves numbers. Additionally, candidates are seeking higher salary ranges, aiming to maximize their earnings in a competitive market.

Green Key Unlocked: Accounting & Finance Experience in the Staffing Industry

In a world where change is constant and opportunities abound, professionals in accounting and finance are increasingly seeking new paths to channel their skills and expertise. Transitioning from a traditional accounting and finance role to a career in accounting and finance recruitment offers an exciting opportunity to embrace change and chart a new course towards professional fulfillment and success. We caught up with Antonia Piazza, Recruiter on our Accounting and Finance team to discuss her journey of transitioning careers and share advice for other professionals who might be considering how their experience can transfer into a recruiting career.

Antonia shared a little on how she got into Accounting and Finance recruiting, saying, “I was looking to relocate to Pittsburgh, so I spoke with a GKR recruiter about accounting openings in Pittsburgh, and, after speaking about accounting roles, she mentioned the possibility of recruiting. I was honestly surprised I hadn’t thought about that career path sooner, as it seemed like a perfect fit given my accounting foundation and appreciation for working with people.”

“There was definitely a learning curve when I transitioned out of accounting and into recruiting,” said Antonia. So, before diving into recruiting, be sure to familiarize yourself with the recruitment cycle. Understand how recruiters source candidates, conduct interviews, and evaluate qualifications.
