Ophthalmic Technician Overview

• The Ophthalmic Technician role involves assisting physicians with patient care, communication, and workflow in a clinical setting.
• Perform various clinical tasks, including patient history collection, administering tests, and scribing medical records.
• Ensure the maintenance and calibration of ophthalmic instruments and equipment, adhering to safety standards.
• Educate patients on ocular conditions and care, providing advice and resolving concerns.
• Collaborate with physicians during in-office procedures and transcribe dictations accurately.
• Monitor inventory levels, restocking supplies as necessary to ensure operational efficiency.

Ophthalmic Technician Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Obtain patient history and document procedures in electronic medical records accurately.
• Perform visual acuities, color vision tests, and other diagnostic assessments as directed.
• Order and manage lenses based on prescriptions, ensuring timely delivery.
• Handle patient inquiries during visits and via phone, resolving issues effectively.
• Maintain and sterilize ophthalmic instruments, ensuring compliance with hygiene standards.
• Assist physicians during procedures and transcribe dictations into records.
• Monitor and manage inventory, ensuring medication and supplies are up-to-date.
• Educate patients on ocular health and post-treatment care.
• Perform additional job-related duties to support the healthcare team.

Ophthalmic Technician Job Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required; formal ophthalmic training preferred.
• Some college coursework in anatomy or medical terminology is advantageous.
• Current JCAHPO certification as COA, COT, or CMOT required within 12 months of hire.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in an ophthalmic or clinical setting preferred.
• Proficiency in electronic medical records and diagnostic equipment operation.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for patient care and documentation.
• Ability to educate patients effectively on ocular health and treatment plans.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe and hygienic clinical environment.
