Assistant Controller Overview

  • The Assistant Controller supports financial operations, focusing on accounting, reporting, and compliance for a dynamic construction business environment.
  • Ensure accurate financial data, contribute to project accounting, and assist in strategic financial decision-making processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain financial integrity and compliance with company policies.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to accounting staff, fostering professional growth and operational efficiency.
  • Support audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting to ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of accounting processes and systems to optimize financial operations.
  • Assist in maintaining internal controls and segregation of duties to safeguard financial assets.

Assistant Controller Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with reporting standards.
  • Monitor job cost reports, ensuring project financial data is current and accurate.
  • Coordinate with project managers to track costs, billings, and change orders effectively.
  • Support cash flow management, budgeting, and forecasting to align with organizational goals.
  • Assist in audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting to ensure compliance.
  • Train and supervise accounting staff, providing guidance and fostering professional development.
  • Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes and systems.

Assistant Controller Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required.
  • 6–11 years of progressive accounting experience; construction industry experience is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in construction-specific accounting software such as Pro-Contractor or CMIC.
  • Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition methods.
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills to support financial analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills to collaborate across teams.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvements and implement effective solutions.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring accounting staff to enhance team performance.
