Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Overview

• The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) will provide occupational therapy treatments under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.
• Assist residents in improving self-care, functional mobility, and safety awareness through therapeutic interventions.
• Document treatment sessions, patient progress, and interdisciplinary team communications accurately and timely.
• Contribute to evaluations by gathering data and administering assessments under supervision.
• Educate patients, families, and caregivers on treatment programs and safety measures.
• Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, facility, and state regulations.
• Maintain patient safety and infection control standards consistently.
• Participate in care conferences and discharge planning as assigned.
• Train patients in the use of adaptive equipment and assistive devices effectively.

Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Carry out occupational therapy interventions according to the established plan of care.
• Assist residents in improving upper extremity function, cognition, and strengthening.
• Document patient progress and treatment sessions comprehensively and accurately.
• Report changes in resident status to the supervising Occupational Therapist promptly.
• Provide therapeutic activities to enhance residents' ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient progress and care plans.
• Maintain compliance with Medicare Part A and Part B documentation requirements.
• Ensure adherence to productivity standards and supervision requirements.
• Educate patients and caregivers on the use of assistive devices and adaptive equipment.

Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Job Requirements

• Current New York State Occupational Therapy Assistant License/Authorization is required.
• NBCOT certification is preferred but not mandatory.
• Experience in skilled nursing rehabilitation or long-term care is preferred.
• Knowledge of Medicare documentation expectations and productivity standards is essential.
• Ability to maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation is required.
• Understanding of PDPM and skilled documentation responsibilities is preferred.
• High School Diploma or GED is required for this position.
• Strong commitment to patient safety and infection control standards is essential.
• Effective communication skills for educating patients and caregivers are necessary.
