Nonprofit Accountant Overview

  • The Nonprofit Accountant role involves providing expert accounting services to nonprofit clients, ensuring compliance and financial accuracy.
  • Collaborate with nonprofit organizations to prepare and review Form 990 tax returns and financial statements.
  • Offer technical guidance on nonprofit accounting matters, including regulatory compliance and GAAP standards.
  • Support clients with budget preparation, audit readiness, and grant reporting requirements.
  • Analyze financial trends and design accounting database structures using QuickBooks Online.
  • Work remotely with occasional travel to the New Jersey office for key engagements.

Nonprofit Accountant Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Serve as the primary accountant on complex nonprofit engagements, ensuring client satisfaction and compliance.
  • Prepare and review interim and year-end close workpapers for nonprofit organizations.
  • Compile financial statements and illustrative dashboards for client presentations.
  • Provide expert advice on nonprofit accounting topics, including functional expense accounting and grant compliance.
  • Design and implement efficient accounting database structures tailored to client needs.
  • Review and ensure the accuracy of work performed by other accountants and bookkeepers.
  • Collaborate with team members to deliver high-quality accounting services.
  • Manage self-administration tasks such as time entry and reporting.

Nonprofit Accountant Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • CPA license preferred or actively pursuing certification.
  • Minimum of five years of professional accounting experience, preferably in public accounting.
  • Proficiency in preparing and reviewing Form 990 tax returns and financial statements.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and compliance requirements.
  • Advanced skills in Excel and QuickBooks Online are essential.
