Graduation season is upon us! While earning your degree is an exciting and proud moment, many young professionals can experience stress and anxiety while entering the workforce.

To help ease these feelings, we’ve put together a few tips and expectations for recent grads to follow while making this transition.

Be realistic with your job search 

It’s important to do your research within your industry and understand the rates for entry level jobs. Try to speak with professionals within your field and gauge their salaries and job titles. Be aware of your worth, but remain realistic. The more you know about your industry, you’ll be more prepared to start your search and less surprised by any new information. 

Consider finding a mentor 

Don’t hesitate to find someone in your industry who really knows the tricks of the trade. Forbes reiterates this, saying, “Many unexpected changes have occurred, and it’s OK to feel confused about the next step. Continue learning to be where you want to be. You can talk to mentors in your desired field and even those outside of your field to gain a broader perspective. Read about others’ experiences and what they’re doing as recent college graduates. There’s so much you can learn from other people and their experiences, so make sure to dig into their resources.”  

Many colleges and universities use alumni networks for this very reason. Consider joining yours and seeing who you can connect with. 

Consider temp jobs 

Our recruiters at Green Key highly suggest considering temp jobs as a way to get your foot in the door. This can be a great way to kickstart your career, especially within large industries, such as financial services. Temp jobs teach transferable skills and are perfect for recent grads beginning their professional journeys. 

Strengthen your remote work skills 

So much has changed during the pandemic, especially within the workforce. With so many companies switching to remote and hybrid schedules, it’s important to adapt to this type of work. As the first generation to immediately jump into this, it may be tricky at first, but learning how to alter your schedule and tasks to adjust to the other members of your team is crucial.  

Be aware of social sleuthing 

Be sure to consider your online presence while applying for jobs. Your social media profiles should remain private, as employers are sure to look you up. Honoring Dr. King By a Day of Service

When Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first declared a national holiday, celebrations were small and quiet affairs. Today, there are parades in cities from coast-to-coast; financial markets and banks are closed; government workers nationally and in many states have the day off; and it is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service.

Calling it a “day on, not a day off,” the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) promotes volunteerism and community projects as a way of honoring Dr. King. Working with The King Center in Atlanta, the CNCS annually awards grants to organizations to develop and coordinate service projects on the MLK Day of Service.

Among the projects taking place today are a 50-volunteer effort to build and equip “little libraries” in Louisiana, and 250-volunteer effort in Englewood, NJ to prepare 2,000 kid-friendly, healthy and easy-to-prepare snack food packages. In New York City, more than 500 volunteers are expected to participate in a series of service projects to support low-income, needy children, seniors and families.

“The most successful projects connect to the life and teaching of Dr. King, meet a pressing community need, and include time to reflect on his teachings,” the CNCS explains, quoting Dr. King who said, “Everyone can be great because everybody can serve.”

Dumb Mistakes That Will Cost You the Job

It is amazing how many perfectly fine candidates sabotage their chances at getting the job.

Matthew Ross, co-owner of two e-commerce sites, tells of a time a candidate volunteered she had lied to her employer about having a medical condition so she could get more time off.

“I couldn’t believe that someone would admit to lying to their former boss to what could have been their new boss,” Ross told writer Annamarie Houlis. “Needless to say, we did not end up hiring the candidate for character concerns.”

Besides the fact she was dishonest, admitting that in an interview with a potential new employer should have been an obvious no-no. Yet, as the article makes clear, committing these interview errors is more common than you think.

One that no one should ever make is to show up for an interview unprepared. Thousands of career sites all say the same thing: Find out everything you can about the organization and the people you’ll be interviewing with. Even a cursory internet search is enough to give you the basics.

What’s surprising is that there are candidates who show up to an interview without doing even that much.

Kari Whaley, a Florida chamber of commerce CEO discovered an extreme example of this when interviewing a candidate for a marketing position. “The candidate began their response with saying they had not yet looked at our website or social media,” recalled Whaley, “and then continued by telling me they weren’t even sure what a Chamber of Commerce was.”

Career sites are replete with less dramatic examples of candidates who did only a cursory search, coming up with blank stares when the interviewer asked about recent company developments.

Houlis’ article has multiple examples of other interview mistakes that even a little preparation would prevent: Failing to make eye contact; speaking ill of a former employer or expressing too much negativity; discussing money.

There is one fail on the list that may not be as obvious, even to someone who has done their homework. That’s asking for the job. Seasoned sales people know not to walk away from a potential customer without asking for their business. The rest of us may not realize just how important that is.

As an interview comes to a close, always ask for the job. It’s not necessary to bluntly say, “I want this job.” If that feels too pushy, an alternative is to express excitement about the company and the position and declare your interest in the job. Be prepared in case the interviewer turns around and asks you why. If they do, take that as an opportunity to reinforce your strong points and the contribution you can make.
