Times have certainly changed since the pandemic. Many jobs that are able to work remotely are doing just that, allowing their employees flexibility and trust while working from home. However, starting a new job remotely, especially if you’ve never worked from home before, can be a little confusing and challenging.
If you’ve recently accepted a remote job, congratulations! We’ve got a few tips and tricks to set you up for success and comfortability during your first week at home.
Set up a healthy and productive space
First things first. You will need a nice, clean, and organized space to work. Since your mind will have trouble separating workspace from personal space, it’s important to set up a mentally comfortable and healthy area for yourself. For instance, investing in a chair with strong back support is crucial. Adding extra touches, such as plants, lights, and artwork around your workspace will support mental health throughout the day.
Establish a schedule early on
Remote work requires a lot of sitting, so you will want to establish a healthy schedule early on. You will likely have extra time in the morning without the stress of a commute. Use this time to leisurely wake up, make yourself breakfast, and settle in.
TopResume also suggests planning out your day and making sure you leave your desk at some point. This helps establish strong work-life boundaries. They say, “At lunch, schedule time to get away from your desk and eat a hearty meal. Maybe even go on a quick run if you have the time. The second part of this routine should center around your work habits. Make lists, set your intentions for each day, and stick to deadlines.”
Learn everyone’s communication preferences
Obviously, not working face to face can sometimes pose a challenge. During your first week working remotely, try to learn the communication preferences of your boss and teammates. Some professionals prefer receiving emails, while others lean toward video chatting. Alternatively, let them know when and how the best way to reach you is as well.
Familiarize yourself with technology
With any new job, there is going to be a learning curve with the new technology and software you’ll be using. This can be a little more challenging at home, as you can’t simply lean over to your closest coworker and ask questions. To avoid confusion, take your time browsing and navigating the onboarding materials provided during your first week. Be sure to ask your boss or manager and questions you have early on to prevent frustration down the line.
